Effect of cutting depth during sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrid) harvest on root characteristics and yield

Ratooning is an important cultivation practice in sugarcane production around the world, with underground buds on remaining stalk acting as source for establishment of a subsequent ratoon crop. However, optimal depth cutting during harvest terms yield and root growth remains unknown. We carried out two-year field study to determine effects three depths (0, 5 10 cm below surface) cane yield. Results showed that increased fresh weight volume by 21–59% 41–127%, respectively, compared 0 cm. Remarkably, also had significant effect development fine roots, which closely linked The was particularly noticeable two traits, surface area roots diameter 1.0–2.0mm, length number tips 0–0.5mm.
